If he had, he would have had 217 votes. Plus four other repubs didn't vote, and at least one of them (Young of AK) almost certainly would have voted for Boehner. (The other three, Carter, Gowdy and Nunnelee all voted for Boehner in 2013, but they're Carter and Gowdy clearly would not have supported him this time; Nunnelee is harder to predict -- he didn't vote because he was in the hospital).

20 Democrats didn't vote, but only 13 were from New York.

Bottom line: it was a bad showing for Boehner, but only marginally worse than in 2013, when he only got 220 votes (and needed 214).
