In reply to the discussion: Pope: Catholics don't have to breed 'like rabbits' [View all]muriel_volestrangler
(106,391 posts)21. No, I haven't the faintest idea what you mean. The only parentheses in the OP or article
are around 'AP' in the credit for Associated Press. You're objecting to that now?
How was anyone meant to know that when you type 'italics', you mean "Parenthesis, quote marks, chopped off sentences, context"? Since you genuinely don't seem to know what the word means, try this:
In typography, italic type is a cursive font based on a stylized form of calligraphic handwriting. Owing to the influence from calligraphy, such fonts normally slant slightly to the right. Italics are a way to emphasise key points in a printed text, or when quoting a speaker a way to show which words they stressed. One manual of English usage described italics as "the print equivalent of underlining".[1]

As for the rest of your whine:
"quote marks" - these are used to indicate what the pope said, such as 'like rabbits'. Are you objecting to people quoting the pope, the way that Muslim extremists object to people drawing Muhammad?
"chopped off sentences" - which sentences do you think are 'chopped off'?
"context" - what about it? The only problem I've see with context in this thread is trying to work out the context of your complaints. When you use a word like 'italics' when you don't know what it means, you make it very difficult for anyone to create any context for your posts at all.

No offense taken. I remember similar stuff in Catholic school, and during homily time in church.

I think using hacked off sentences in italics is poor journalism, a calling card of propaganda.

You know what I mean. Parenthesis, quote marks, chopped off sentences, context, does that help?

I agree, complaining about non-existent italics was an attempt to derail the conversation

The italics reference confused you? Because " hacked off sentences" was not clear enough?

Condoms, which are forbidden birth control also work to prevent disease transmission.
