Because you throw Turkey out of NATO over this, and we lose our bases in Turkey, from which we are fighting ISIS. Shunned Turkey would probably turn to Russia or possibly Iran (religious conflict may prevent that though).

Which then makes the Syria situation even more complex - would Russia stop propping up Assad if they didn't need Syria for their Mediterranean bases?

And would Greece let us rebuild our Turkish bases there? They'd like the cash, but have not been particularly helpful in the conflicts in the area.
