Many of those, however, were not (R), if the truth be told.

I guess I should say they weren't "true (D)," even though they were proud to say that they had never voted anything but straight party-ticket (D) since they were able to vote in the late '40s or early '50s. But to preserve current view about Party purity and avoid the need for samokritika, let's just say they weren't (D). Not at all.
