4. One word explains it: racism.

It's been drilled into their heads by Limpbutt and Savage and FOX for decades and it has worked.

The very people who should be favorable towards the left and unions hate them because of the constant, 24/7 right wing, racist, misogynist dog whistles that dominate the air waves of our country.

Trump's "make America great again" code words penetrated the thin veneer of respectability and got down to the not deeply buried white identity politics of those who want their country back, who want the black guy out of the White House, and the woman candidate back in her place.
