Is so that the states (imaginary geographical lines) don't get superseded by large population centers (by the fact that more US citizens live there).
They think that the higher the population density or location of said population, the less those people should matter, favoring the opinions of economy-lacking wastelands with fewer people. Hell, most Trump voters just flat out say that California's votes shouldn't matter.
