I think that the article reflects a narrow POV.

Gillum didn't run as a Berniecrat, but did accepted his help when offered.

The photos in the mailings didn't mention Sanders - who came on as the last endorser in the campaign. Maybe he was balking at Gillum taking large donations from out-of-state billionaires. Or maybe that Gillum's communications director was formerly Debbie Wasserman Shultz's press secretary. Or that Gillum had endorsed his opponent.

I also think that being out there backing Gillum up against RW attacks is more of a support than using him as part of a fundraiser for one's own campaign.
