Doing that with your high school friends, college friends , previous work colleagues , people you have met on trips, etc. The number of people who need to keep in touch with gets into the hundreds. That is the allure of facebook, it is like a fancy digital address book.

Facebook is evil, and there needs to be an open source alternative, but that has not materialized yet.
