It reminds me of the scene from the two-part "Batshit Valley" from IFC's "Documentary Now!", in which the charlatan cult leader was (spoilers) eventually thrust in front of a speeding car by his cult members for them to prove his divinity to the world. Then he screamed in agony about them being idiots, finally revealing to them it was all a hoax, before dying.
