are usually compared on a country to country basis. This is misleading. A metric can be generalized for a country with national health care where everyone has access to whatever is covered by the metric. But in the US where access varies so widely by state and income level to generalize the metric is misleading. Maternal mortality rates in California and Massachusetts are similar to those in Sweden and Denmark, while Louisiana's is ten times higher than California's and more similar to Russia's or Sri Lanka's rate.
