8. A fair number of gay people do get married to someone of the opposite sex at some point

Many times it's an attempt to 'not be gay'. That ploy (obviously) rarely works out, especially nowadays when being openly gay is far more accepted that it was decades ago, so people feel a bit less pressure to 'conform'.

Sometimes they do so because they want biological kids, too.

Could also be that he's Bisexual, but didn't want to present that way because he thought it's easier to be elected as a gay man than as a bisexual one.

Not saying he's not lying about that too, it's certainly possible. But so is the opposite in this one aspect of his story.
