Viruses cannot walk, they cannot hop, they cannot fly.

They cannot move without being carried.

They need an agent to travel on, such as spittle or phlegm or moisture particles. For simplicity, let's just call these carriers spittle.

If you block the ability of spittle being expelled from the mouth and nose from moving freely through the air, the ability of the virus to move through the air is also impeded.

The less virus is able to travel through the air, the lower the risk of it infecting someone else.

If you breath, cough, or sneeze into open air than spittle can travel or even float for some time and some distance in the air. If your mouth and nose is covered by a mask, at least some of that spittle will be blocked by the mask. The finer the filtration ability of the mask, the less virus can become airborne.

I don't understand how this is in any way controversial.
