Somewhat tangential, I know, but Ruth Rosen's thesis reminds me of Adam Curtis' documentary series Century of the Self. I can't recommend this series enough. You can watch all four parts online at http://archive.org/details/AdamCurtis_TheCenturyOfTheSelf.
