The other girls remained there but could only watch; they could not deal with the ickyness of handling a person covered in her own vomit.

All of these kids, including my son, were foreign exchange students at the time, from Europe and the former Soviet Union. The girl was from Spain. Had the authorities been involved, the girl would probably have been deported in disgrace. There is no telling how the families of the other kids might have reacted to a scandal of that magnitude. Probably several of them would have been sent home as well.

But that's a whole other story.

Fortunately, the girl and the other kids vouched for my son and he was held blameless of the whole affair. The girl was disciplined by her host family and the sponsoring organization, but not to the extent of sending her packing. She finished her year and then went home.
