They did. (Edit: Just read your edit. Leaving this up anyway since so many seem not to know it)
When the ACA passed policies existing at that time were grandfathered.
The policies being canceled now? Not those policies. They're new policies that were issued after the ACA was passed that the insurance companies knew damn well would have to be cancelled again right away.
OR, they're policies the insurance companies don't actually have to cancel but are anyway because they want to try to push people to higher cost plans and take this one time opportunity to blame it on Obamacare because most people don't understand what the ACA actually does.
OR, they're policies being cancelled because the company decided to cut costs (My company cancelled two very comprehensive PPO plans this year. a bunch of coworkers naturally started bitching about that damn Obamacare costing them their awesome plan. Turns out upon some pointed questioning of the benefits department they were going to be cancelled anyway, ACA or no ACA, because they were costing the company a fortune.
