41. James Melton: It's springtime for crazy in Washington

Political pundits are already talking about the presidential election in 2016. But for the organizers of Operation American Spring (OAS), a protest scheduled for later this week on the National Mall in Washington, that’s too long to wait for change. They want a revolution – a real one – and they want it now.

OAS, a collection of tea party, militia and far-right “patriot movement” types, will fail miserably. But its very existence shows how dysfunctional and disconnected from reality our political discourse has become.

The mad-as-hell supporters of OAS look at America and see a nation living under the boot of tyranny – communist tyranny that has destroyed freedom as we used to know it. Elections aren’t the solution, they say, because the “constitutional crisis” is too great. They are demanding nothing less than the immediate overthrow of the United States government.

Of course, OAS organizers don’t put it that way. They insist their goal is to peacefully “restore the republic” by ripping it away from plotters who have committed intolerable crimes against the U.S. Constitution and the people. In what they say will be a peaceful, unarmed rally, OAS hopes to put millions of people in the street in an action modeled after the mass protests that toppled Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.
