... to the White House' -Michelle Obama

Saturday's service was private, but Wake Forest streamed in live online. The poet's family said that other events to commemorate her life will be held at other cities across the country.

Former President Bill Clinton gave a touching, personal tribute to Angelou, telling the packed church: 'She had enough experiences to last five lifetimes.'

He said the last time he had seen Angelou was just a few weeks before her death, when they both attended a 50th anniversary ceremony in Boston of the signing of the Civil Rights Act.

He said: 'I went over and hugged her, and said "I can't believe you got yourself here". Maya told me: 'Just because I am wheelchair-bound, doesn't mean I don't get around.'

'That girl got around,' he added, to laughter from those at the ceremony.
