The stats cited are comparing the GOP primary voters (a minority in both parties, most folks don't bother to vote until the general election, if at all) with the voting-age population of the US some one hundred years ago. The latter number includes a lot of people who, as I said, don't often bother to vote unless extremely motivated.

That said, it is a good illustration of why the GOP nominee is not going to be reflective of the general electorate, unless the individual can make that whole right-turn, left-turn thing.
