and politicians seem to want to do little to improve the situation. Instead, many enable it to feel apparently proud of themselves, get votes, money or whatever, and I imagine some feel the same as the person you described. All of this religious stuff IMO is symptomatic of some very dangerous undercurrents building up in the US.
