Johnson who signed the Civil Rights and Medicare Bills among other things. Bernie is more like LBJ in terms of his social programs than any presidential candidate at this time.
It is really a cheap shot for Matthews to quibble over the Democratic Socialist label that Bernie wears. Bernie would probably differ with Johnson on foreign policy, but not much on social policies. Bernie is no extremist from what I hear in his speeches, and I listen to him a lot.
The Democratic Party has moved far to the left of the Party that I grew up in with Truman, Johnson, McGovern, McCarthy (ran for president) and even Carter.
And Tweety has moved right with the Party. I'm still of the old school, what Democrats have been historically.
Bill Clinton tried to play the folksy, old-school Democrat, but he really wasn't as we realized in 2008 when his bank and other schemes fell apart. Right now we are reaping the right-wing harvest of Bill Clinton's signing the Telecommunications Act.
