This is a border patrol checkpoint. Ever since Patriot Act, all of your vehicle is automatically subject to search at the patrolman's discretion automatically.
Had the driver simply acted the courteous traveller, didn't matter if he just bullshitted the officer about destination. The moment he flapped his big trap with "insubordination", he made himself a target for harassment and search.
I agree some of the actions of the BP officer were a bit out of line as well.
Regardless, had driver just acted a little bit more politely, he'd likely have simply been on his way outta there.
