2. Whether or not demonstrators are violent is a red herring

Twenty years after the end of the Cold War, NATO's raison d'etre, NATO still exists as a military alliance. Why? The United States is having a financial crisis, so why are we continuing to spend enormous sums of money maintaining a military alliance to defend against attacks and provocations from the Soviet Union?

Of course, I think I know the answer, I just want to hear someone official say it.
