Now if the suspect is NOT freely talking then other interrogation techniques may be used.

But as long as his mouth is running about what happened you want to keep him talking. People naturally talk more to a friendly person. That is why the good cop/bad cop routine is so effective.

If you suddenly turn hostile on a cooperative suspect then he may shut up and demand a lawyer. It may be emotionally satisfying to you to see the police treat him with hostility, but it would be really stupid police work.
