I think the situation is going to get a lot worse with the next administration coming in. I think the only hope would be for Russia and Syria to give a death blow to the American supported "moderate" jihadist to the point that when the next admin comes it, they would have no choice but to admit defeat.

I still think they would try to carve out Syria for themselves but that would be tougher now with Russia in the country.
