28. I had a friend from Taiwan who taught me a little mandarin.

around where I live many people speak Cantonese. When my friends and I would go to school they often talked among themselves in their own language. I didn't speak it or understand it but was totally okay with them speaking it around me. I would have liked for them to teach me but they were often too busy. I didn't learn Japanese until College, because my relatives had long ago forgotten to pass on our language ties, or decided that English in the new world was far better for our family to teach.

This goes for Native Hawaiian too.. why teach it when no one was going to use it?
