Round earth and its diameter was documented by Eratosthenes in the 3rd century BC (and probably known about even before then).

Columbus chose to ignore his estimate and go with one that was 1/3 the actual size (only lucking out by having an intervening land mass).

Heliocentrism was held back by the Church and not scientists. The theory existed since about the 3rd century as well.
