Roys first house next to John was much closer, but the house burned down, a tragic accident, and two of Roys sons were killed in the fire. John bought that property, and as a promise to Roy, built an orchard so that nothing but life would grow on the property...the only remnants are the stones from the chimney. Roys last home was built on the same road, adjacent to that property. Thats the house where the party took place.
I was a little kid then, but Dad told me years later that Roy had an affinity for me because I reminded him of one of the sons he lost in that fire.
The Cash home would be lost years later to fire during a renovation by then owner Barry Gibbs. All that remains is the stone foundation, the pool, and the stone wall that bordered the property...Roys house was owned by Marty Stuart and his wife, one of Cashs daughters, for a while but I couldnt tell you who owns it now, but its still a beautiful property. My wife and I joke all the time that well buy the Cash place when we win the lottery. Also, the orchard remnants remain untouched.
Irony of ironies, I suppose, when I moved back home last year, my wife and I bought a house that is a five min walk from those properties...we pass them every day taking our son to school.
Also, FWIW, if youve ever seen the movie Walk the Line the way they portray the Cash house is dang near spot on...they did a great job of showing the house and the dock and boat house on the lake. It remains one of the prettiest properties on Old Hickory Lake.
