4. Control freaks and abusers really turn on the charm at the beginning

and abuse is often insidious. Add to that the honeymoon phase after abuse occurs to suck a partner back in and you've got a nearly unbreakable cycle. People who are abused live for the days or weeks when the charm offensive is turned back on by the abuser and they can once again experience being with the perfect soul mate.

I don't automatically believe anyone. Mostly, I educate about the cycle and what a trap it is and talk about how it never gets better, not without a commitment to years of therapy, and that most people are better off leaving--the target to avoid injury or death and the abuser to avoid prison.

I don't pretend to know anything that has gone on here, but if this was typical behavior on her part, he got off cheap, raw deal or not.
