4. Remember Bush's post 9/11 Patriot Act?

That legislation took away many if our Constitutional rights under the claim of national security interests. People were scared, the politicians, Republicans and Democrats alike (I think there was only a couple of them who voted against this extraordinary power grab) were clamoring to pass this bill and the media was on their side.

So we got indefinite detentions of immigrants; blanket permission for law enforcement to search anything without the owner's consent or or even knowledge. They gave the FBI free access to everyone's personal data without a court order.

Thankfully there were several legal challenges to the Patriot Act and courts ruled many of its provisions were unconstitutional.

So we've already been there-done that and it didn't turn out too well, let's not do a repeat.
