What I recall reading/hearing is that the simple masks provide "some" protection for inbound airborne virus droplets... but they provide MORE prevention/blocking of outbound airborne virus droplets (ie: from an infected individual).

They are not a perfect solution, but they do help some. And "some" is better than "nothing". And if everyone is wearing them (to protect against inbound and to block outbound) then we'll all be better off.

I just pulled out my sewing machine, and I'll be making some masks next week. (But I expected that I'll be doing a MUCH BETTER, and much safer, job than Kay did in this video.)
