the Declaration of Independence was written by white men, for white men. I don't believe any of the Founders considered black men to be "equal" when the Declaration was written -- I doubt it even occurred to them that "all men" might include black men. Black men were property, not people.
That's the context in which Liz Harrington is outraged -- that the original intent of the document has evolved. She insists that it's outrageous to suggest that Americans might have moved on in the last 250 years, and that the concept of "all men" should now be more properly recognized as "all people."
