conservatives opposed Civil Rights legislation at the time, and that never changed. They just lost. But they didn't change their minds about it. If you listen to them talk on the radio, it is absolutely inconsistent with supporting the Civil Rights Act.

This is why they want to do away with education about the Civil Rights Era, they want people to think Civil Rights Movement was about warm-fuzzy, everyone like each other. It wasn't, it was about legislation, specifically federal legislation, and legislation which goes against their whole philosophy.

Same with Social Security and Medicare, by the way, both of which they opposed it bitterly at the time, and they still do, but covertly now.
