And the video raises questions about the differences between what we know and what we only think we know.

The solution to ignorance is never to make the mistake of thinking you have the final answer, to keep on searching, and to lean heavily towards the results of expert research and analysis. Unfortunately, most of us (and I’m not excluding myself) lack the time to look deeply into controversial issues and, therefore, are easily suckered by quick, often glib, and easily digestible bites of often erroneous information.

The only solution is to be skeptical, to -- as Scanlon’s magazine’s motto had it --“trust your mother, but cut the cards.” Doing that, you’re less likely to be taken in so easily by conspiracy theories such as those surrounding vaccinations.

(And, no, I’m not suggesting that Ms. McCarthy was laying down a line of scam on an unsuspecting public. I believe that, in her heart, she believed the baloney that Andy Wakefield was disseminating.)
