8. I spent time in the USSR in the late '80s

Went with my grandmother and her peace group, they had a "sister town" there. We were actually scheduled to visit Kiev, but then Chernobyl happened. And there was such hope under Gorbachev's progressive policies, not to mention the statues everywhere as reminders of the horror Russia experienced during WWII. The last thing they need is another war - a war of Putin's choice in his quest to recreate the former USSR...
