“I was an independent journalist, and we realized that there was a lot of metaphorical gate-keeping in journalism. So there’s a story that says, ‘This General’s approaching this city, and he’s got a column coming from the north, south, east, and west. And a fifth column inside the city ready to open the gates.’ And that’s where the term came from. There were a whole bunch of us that used it in, I guess, 2015, 2016, in that range.
