In a criminal case, there is a time from the end of the trial to the sentencing date. The amount of time depends on the state. In most states it's 60 days.

The purpose is to put together the complete proceedings on the case. This is done for the judge and also for the record. In some criminal cases, for example, it might include psychological profiles that give an idea of how likely the offender would be to repeat the crime.

It also helps the judge decide on the sentence. Later on this compilation of information is used when deciding on probation or parole.

It takes a long time to put together. I've seen and read a number of them in my volunteer work as a judicial activist.
