I believe they prefer to tell the American People what to think vs how to think and that has been going on at least since the early 1980s.

Of course they have obvious financial conflicts of interest which are all but ignored.

As a result critical thinking has been greatly diminished with the inevitable result of getting Bush the least, Iraq, torture, *rump and January 6th.
