read the Ten Commandments as if they were written in English by modern-day Americans. These commandments are not a call to morality, they are iron-age tribal taboos written by and for Hebrew MEN. The proscription against adultery, for example, has nothing to do with the sanctity of marriage. Adultery was a crime against property. A woman was the property of her father until she married, when she became the property of her husband.
