(3,622 posts)but your attitude reminds me as to why I avoided Marines. I did not "fear" the Marines but I was smart enough to know that avoiding them would keep me out of trouble. "Smart" is something I don't associate with Marines. Marines are trained to respond to commands and do what they are told. "Thinking" is not something they are trained to do but something to avoid.
I was in the US Air Force. When I got my draft number it was rather low and I really did not want to spend my time in the Army or the Marines and end up in Viet Nam so I joined the USAF and my test scores were sufficiently high that I got into the USAF. I was at Patrick AFB, Cocoa Beach, FL for 3 of the 4 years I was in. I was part of Medical Operations for Manned Space and participated in Apollo 17, the Sky Lab missions and Apollo Soyuz mission. I have my DOD certificates and mission patches on my office wall at my house. What cool stuff did you do in the service? At least I was in a situation where some good came of my military service and I did not have to participate directly in a war that we should not have been in.
During my stay at Patrick AFB I did my fair share of short arm inspections for GC and sent many a person from the Army and Marines to the ER for their Penicillin G to treat their infections! We had every branch of the service at Patrick because of Defense Race Relations Institute was there.
