Traditionally 600-level physics courses were supposed to be for PhD candidates in specialties other than the course topic. The new guy hadn't received the memo. I was looking forward to an intro to string theory (or M theory or whatever they wanted to call it that week) and the first lecture didn't seem bad. But he had some homework problems posted online as a "warmup." It wasn't that I couldn't solve any of them. That wouldn't have made me drop the course immediately.
What did make me drop it was that I could not figure out what any of them were even asking.
