and our pipes froze every winter despite being buried 3 feet underground. My dad made my sister and me go to an old fashioned hand pump down the road and use a hose to fill a giant trashcan on the trunk of our car. Then we had to siphon it through the hose down the hill/parking spot into the bathroom window and into the tub. That was our water for cooking, cleaning and the toilet for the whole weekend for four of us. My parents found this to be a "relaxing weekend for the family" as well as shoveling 3 ft of snow off of the roof. My fingers and toes are still thawing out 30 years later. We left a faucet open with a trickle of water when we weren't there and it helped somewhat.
