(33,040 posts)Johnny was relating the first time he heard a "bit" from Sam Kinison's act.
Sam was singing "Can't Help Falling in Love With You" as Elvis would sing it,
(Sam really had a good voice, believe it or not).
I tuned in to the station just after he began singing and I thought:
"Well, this is definitely not Elvis, but whoever it is has a pretty good voice"
Just then, in the middle of the song, Sam starts shouting insults at the woman he's supposedly singing about,
Of course, I recognized him immediately then.
He continued shouting insults for a minute or so, then finished the song singing it straight.
Carson was telling Sam about how this comedy bit was the first time he ever heard Sam, and he, Johnny Carson, was absolutely floored by the bit, and then & there decided to have Sam as a guest on The Tonight Show.
Also, it was great seeing Sam in Rodney Dangerfield's "Back to School" where he played a history professor.
He died while at the peak of his career, and probably would have gone on to make movies and TV shows, as well as continuing to perform his act live in front of audiences.
That drunken POS who ended his life should have been given jail time, imo.
