I would think that this is an effort to

1). Condense down the Christmas Seasonal Sections that have likely sold through and have pretty big holes in them now. (You can't sell empty shelves.

2). Get stuff out of the backroom, so that people can move safely. This time of year, it's a maze of incoming deliveries from warehouse and vendors and they are being pounded with the Beer, Soda, Chips, Liquor deliveries that need space for the final push this weekend.

3). Keep the staff working, particularly seasonal workers who will likely soon be departing.

4). Generally get a jump on things. Being ahead is never, ever a bad thing.
