Dogs and cats follow the points of those things up and down trees before they remember that gravity says that only works so far.

Our neighbors in Dallas once despaired of getting a kitten back into the house after she ran out into the night. I got out my laser pointer, and the kitten chased it back into their house within 15 seconds.
