In reply to the discussion: What will you never wear? [View all]Aristus
(66,379 posts)I was at the opera with my wife one night. I had just bought a nice white dinner jacket, and was taking it for a test drive. I wore standard black tie with it. I felt like Humphrey Bogart in 'Casablanca', or something.
Anyway, we were in the lobby at intermission, and Mrs. Aristus went off to the ladies room. I stood there just kind of idly looking at my phone, when I felt someone approaching me. I looked up and saw a gorgeous woman smiling at me. She said: "You're beautiful!"
I was a little taken aback by this, but managed to stammer out: "So are you!"
Just then, this little old lady came up to the younger woman and said: "What are you two doing, dear?"
"I was just telling this gentleman how nice he looked, Mother."
I laughed, and pointed at the younger woman, obviously the older lady's daughter. "Well she started it!"
"Ah, a mutual admiration society, eh?" The mother took my elbow and guided me aside and asked me: "Tell me, young man, are you staying for the rest of the opera?"
"Yes, ma'am. Most definitely."
She patted my arm. "Good".
Just then, the daughter kind of steered the mother away, flashed a dazzling smile at me over her shoulder, and walked off.
I still don't know entirely what that was all about, but I blessed my white dinner jacket for the opportunity for a nice moment.
Mrs. Aristus and I had a laugh about it when she got back from the ladies room.
