...because of the American setting--Philly's Main Line--which he should have done more of; the historical verisimilitude, based on actual facts of the famous Affair of the Poisons in the time of Louis XIV; and the sheer menace of the book, that slowly overwhelms the reader. And an ending that raises the hair on your head...
