(40,238 posts)You say the fan in the outside unit doesn't come on. How about the compressor itself? If that isn't running either, then check, by removing the access cover, to see if the contactor is in the closed position. First kill the power to the outside unit by shutting off the HVAC unit switch before removing the access cover. With the cover off and if you have identified the contactor, then turn power back on to the unit and see if it closes. The thermostat has to be set to cool and the indoor fan running while doing this check.
If the contactor does close but neither the outdoor fan or compressor runs, then most likely you have a problem wit hthe high voltage. Does the HVAC unit switch have fuses? Some do. If the contactor does not close and the thermostat is calling for cooling and the indoor fan is running, then you have may a problem with the low voltage side. The contactor itself could be bad. With the A/C shut off, check the thin wire for breaks. Sometimes when people mow or weed whack around their outdoor unit, they'll accidentally cut that thin wire.
I really can't give you any more advice unless you have the proper tools and test equipment. and be careful when checking out the outdoor unit as there is 240 volts there.
