(1,412 posts)great deals of lots of household items and tools . I shop there a lot. I have never volunteered there, but I did offer to volunteer at a large local hospital's breast center. I did not hear from them. Don't know what goes on with some of these non profits.
I did a trade with my neighbor, he put in a new kitchen faucet for me and I made him a beautiful garden stepping stone for his wife's birthday. I gave him a second one for helping with a leak I had in my bathroom. (I do mosaic art) I pay him a little also, but certainly not the same as I would have to pay a repair man.
Trades are great.
Another friend is a great seamstress, so I will have her sew me a couple of cute new summer dresses and give her a mosaic mirror. A man I know at a local art gallery is a photographer, so I am going to give him an old vintage camera I no longer use, and ask him to photograph my mosaic art work so I can get a portfolio started.
Many people have talents they don't utilize. Think of anything you could offer, goods or services and make an effort to connect with like thinking neighbors and do some serious networking with people. Being financially strapped isn't fun, so many are suffering now, not enough money to meet their basic needs.
Membership to the Athletic Club is only $15.00 a mo., so I use that facility, taking advantage of the gym pool and great showers, especially in summer . Living in the desert is hot, hot. energy bills, very high.
Most states have a freecycle group. (see link) It's a great site to get free stuff you need. I use this group as well, and it's good to donate what you don't need for someone else.
http://www.freecycle.org/ Good luck nobody special, so many on this site willing to help.
