The tree growing out of the cleft in the rock looked very much like the Japanese plum trees that grow all over the place here. I can totally attest to their resilience and vigour.

When we moved into this house, many years ago, there was a stump of one right near the back fence. By the end of the following summer, a few suckers sprouted from the stump, and I decided to leave them and see what might happen. They turned into 5 stems of almost equal size, which is about the size of a small adult example of the type, and itthey grow in a very pleasing "bouquet" shape.
