It was the only time I have ever been inside a Macy's. They took 20% off the already on sale towels and linens when I filled out the application. Later I got the new card and then the bill in the mail. I paid the bill and haven't been in a Macy's since. I didn't bother closing the account - I knew they would shut it down if was never used again.

I've read that closing accounts in good standing hurts your credit score and I have several accounts I do not use anymore that have never been closed but that are marked as "inactive."

My GM Mastercard is one. I applied for it to build up points towards a car. For some reason, they put it into my husband's name and me as a "cardholder." When there was a problem with the account they would not talk to me, they'd only talk to my husband. So I paid it off, put the card in the closet and haven't used it since. Haven't bought a GM car since, either. I think we had about $7,000 worth of points, too.

AT&T Universal Card is heading that way, for the same reason. I'm the one that makes sure the bills get paid, but they won't talk to me or add me as co-account holder. They need my business more than I need their card.
